How The Phoenix Center works.
The Phoenix Center is an accredited, not-for-profit special education school located in Nutley, New Jersey, serving students ages 5-21 with autism spectrum disorder, multiple disabilities, behavioral disabilities, and intellectual disabilities.
Founded in 1991 by Dr. Geraldine A. Gibbia, Ph.D. and Dr. Douglas Berrian, Ed.D., the organization has grown to employ approximately 200 staff members serving students from 58+ school districts and 8+ New Jersey counties. Under the leadership of Executive Director Julie Mower, M.A. Ed., The Phoenix Center has established itself as a resource for comprehensive special education.
The Phoenix Center's educational model is anchored by hands-on, real-life, community-based instruction. While the school incorporates evidence-based therapeutic approaches—including Applied Behavior Analysis—as part of its comprehensive program, its core function is to provide individualized, customized special education services rather than standalone ABA therapy.
The school's team consists of highly qualified, certified, and/or licensed educators and related service providers who work collaboratively to address the educational, behavioral, and therapeutic needs of each student. Programs are individually tailored based on assessment and ongoing evaluation of student progress.
