Western Michigan University Autism Center

Western Michigan University Autism Center of Excellence (WMU-ACE) is a university-based behavioral health organization providing comprehensive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services to individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the center integrates clinical practice with academic training through the Department of Psychology, offering evidence-based interventions delivered by Board Certified Behavior Analysts and Registered Behavior Technicians.

The Kalamazoo Autism Center, the primary service delivery program, serves children and young adults ages 2-21 with autism and developmental disabilities. Founded in 2008 and expanded to its current location in 2016, the center accepts multiple insurance plans including Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Aetna, and Medicaid, as well as private pay options. Services are delivered across three modalities: center-based therapy, home-based interventions, and school-based consultation.

Beyond direct clinical services, WMU-ACE operates specialized programs for older youth and young adults. The Autism Services Center provides transition support and coaching for autistic and neurodiverse college students, while the PROMOTES program assists individuals with autism in gaining paid employment and workplace skills. These programs reflect the organization's commitment to lifespan support for individuals on the autism spectrum.

The organization has demonstrated significant growth and institutional support. In July 2023, the center received a $4 million investment from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, recognizing its role as a regional leader in autism services. WMU-ACE is housed within Western Michigan University's College of Arts and Sciences, allowing behavior technicians to integrate academic knowledge of behavior analysis with direct clinical practice.
