§02 · Approach

How The Autism Community in Action works.

The Autism Community in Action (TACA) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2000 by Lisa Ackerman, dedicated to providing education, support, and empowerment to families and individuals affected by autism spectrum disorder.

TACA's core services include parent education and support through chapter meetings and coffee talks, community events, parent mentoring programs, national autism conferences, webinars, and an autism journey guides website with a support hotline. Most TACA services are offered at no cost to families. Since 2006, TACA has also administered medical assistance scholarships that help families access physician-prescribed services, independent assessments, adaptive technologies, and crisis funding.

Operating from Irvine, California, TACA has established 41 chapters throughout the United States, enabling families in diverse communities to connect with local support networks and resources. The organization is led by parents, professionals, and advocates united by lived experience and a commitment to helping individuals diagnosed with autism achieve independence.

TACA's mission centers on providing practical, scientific, and compassionate information to help families make informed decisions about therapies, medical care, and everyday support. The organization recognizes that autism affects the whole family and works to reduce isolation while building community among families navigating the autism journey.

My family and I have been part of TACA for 10+ years. I can't say enough about how amazing it has been. The progress that we made rose exponentially thanks to our mentor mom, access to incredibly knowledgeable doctors and getting resources as we travel this journey.

The events have been very beneficial for me and learning how to advocate for my son and the legal accommodations that are possible. Grateful to have found this community

TACA is the world's largest family support group for those who have children with autism. I have never seen a more caring, compassionate group of parents, that can help educate and guide you to resources to help your child. Please check out their website for free resources.

Formerly Talk About Curing Autism, an anti vaxxer group that believed in the false idea that vaccines were causing autism, they changed their name not when autistics spoke up to them, but when the public court of opinion finally began listening. Parents of autistics running the autism conversation Ultimately care about their own who happen to be autistic and those like themselves. They'll say otherwise to deny it, but ask them where are their autistic board members. They think being the parent of an autistic makes them a suitabld substitute for actually autistic voices. They'll treat you better if you're like them or if you're their good complacent little kid with autism. They do not respect autistic adults to treat us as essential at the leadership table; only on the menu. They have no idea how they teach other family members of autistics to care only about their own only for them to undermine other people's autistic loved ones. Nothing about autistic folks without us.
