This organization claims to be "inclusive" to people on the Autism SPECTRUM but can't even allow individuals with Level 1 Autism or low support needs to participate in social skills. They require that every person even an adult have a caregiver or parent with them at all times. How can you claim to be inclusive when you shut out people that have social needs as well? Just because someone can live on their own and doesn't need a caretaker doesn't mean they aren't worthy of getting care. This is why there needs to be a separate diagnosis of ASPERGERS so that this discrimination does not happen to anyone. I don't know why it was lumped into all in one diagnosis when obviously Autism is not the same. They only cater to people that can't function in society.
After moving to Florida 2.5 years ago we found ASGO's social group for my adult son. Everyone at ASGO is committed to our kids and committed to supporting them in so many ways. You get out of it what you put into it. You have to sign up for groups, you have to participate and you have to be willing to be involved. ALL money they collect is spent locally AND ON THEIR PROGRAMS. So blessed to be a part of this organization!
We have been part of ASGO for several years. I cannot be more grateful about this organization. They provide us with support, guidance, and a lot of activities and opportunities for our son. It has been a bless to us. I truly recommends it to every autism parent. Thank you ASGO for all you do for our families!
We have been a member of several other autism groups in the Orlando area for many years so I feel that I am more than qualified to say that without a doubt there is NOT another group that hosts as many fun, family events for all ages of children on the spectrum. Yes, you do have to pay for some events but it is a minimum cost and not the entire cost of the event. Usually, all big events have food, beverage, tshirts to wear and goodie bags or something adorable for the kids to take home. There are socialization groups for different age groups, art lessons, major theme park trips, glow in the dark easter egg hunt, snowball fights (adorable, plush snowballs), trick or treating event, as well as events for Mother's (fun gifts for Mom's and a great time) and Father's Day and outings for Mom's of kids with autism and the Christmas party spoils these children to unbelievable levels as you can't believe the amount of toys each child with ASD receives! ASGO is run by volunteers who have or know someone on the spectrum. It is a personal mission for them to donate their time, energies and monies to plan, fund and clean up afterwards without any pay. They do it because they love someone with autism. Membership is $30 a year for the entire family. Truly a great deal! For our family, as a blended family, it enabled my step children to enjoy activities and make bonds with my son. Having a step brother with ASD can be challenging and ASGO provided a great venue to help our family connect on so many different levels. Since, I am now a step grandmother, my grandson goes to the events, too. Our family is extremely grateful and we feel very blessed to have found ASGO. We have joined all the autism groups and enjoy every one but no one offers the amount of activities on a yearly basis as ASGO. Additionally, ASGO is helping first responders learn to understand children and kids on the spectrum and have provided training for law enforcement through the state of Florida and they are expanding nationwide. No other group offers this type of training, period. All I am say, is God Bless ASGO, they are making a huge difference in our community! Heidi Haines Handley
