Hillside Atlantic Review – My Experience I attended Hillside Atlantic as a teen, and I want to share my experience honestly. My time there was extremely harmful and retraumatizing, and I believe families should be fully informed before considering this facility. Key issues I experienced: Physical and emotional abuse: I was physically restrained if I cried or was considered “dysregulated,” even though I had been self-harm free prior to admission. Bruises from holds were common. Extreme lack of privacy: There were cameras in bedrooms and hallways, and I was watched while showering. Isolation from family: Phone calls were limited to 10 minutes per week, supervised, and discussing any mistreatment could result in punishment. Punitive treatment: Small actions, like talking in line, could result in loss of privileges including talking, comfort items, or meals. Staff bullying and shaming: Staff frequently bullied us about appearance, behavior, or minor mistakes. One staff member called me “tubby.” Misrepresentation of treatment: Hillside claimed to offer DBT, but there was only one DBT group per week; much of the time was rec therapy or PE, even for kids with physical disabilities. Forcing self-blame and forgiveness: Staff required us to blame ourselves for our parents’ abuse and to forgive them, even when the abuse was ongoing. “Washing out” neurodiversity: Staff withheld ADHD medication and told some autistic kids their traits were being “washed out,” rather than providing appropriate support. Trauma invalidation: Staff told me my past sexual assault and experiences were my fault and they would tell people to "just get over it" during flashbacks or major episodes. Psychological manipulation: The program misrepresented its approach and sometimes used religious narratives despite being advertised as non-religious. Favoritism among clients: Staff treated certain clients differently, excusing harmful behavior from some while punishing others. For example, a girl attacked me, but staff punished me instead and gave her preferential treatment. Filthy and unsafe environment: The facility was consistently dirty. I witnessed a girl soil herself during episodes and staff left her sitting in her own waste for hours until she got up to clean it herself. My experience caused ongoing trauma, flashbacks, and hypervigilance that I continue to work through years later. I felt unsafe, unheard, and punished rather than supported. I am sharing this review so families can ask critical questions and advocate for their children’s safety. Please research thoroughly and consider alternatives, especially for teens with a history of trauma.
I was at hillside from January-June 2025 I was on the Evans cottage and it completely changed my life. While being there, I sometimes felt like it was pointless, but i’ve been proven wrong considering the progress i’ve made. It’s been a year since I was first admitted and I still use the skills I learned daily. I’ve been able to accomplish so much since i’ve been home and none of it would have been possible if it weren’t for the amazing people I met there. Ms. C, Ms. Ashley, Ms. Tianna, Ms. Kim, and Ms. Grace were some of the cottage staff that influenced me the most acting as role models and offering the best support. I also want to thank Ms. Toya, Ms. Melanie and Ms. Laura for offering me some of the best therapeutic services i’ve received. You guys all changed my life for the better and showed me that I don’t have to stay broken and that change is okay. Thank you all so much for the work you do.💗
It was ok.. I didn’t like the girls that much and it was pretty horrible in the averill cottage. The things that I liked is that I made friends but I didn’t like the loud noises and how my anxiety got higher and higher in hillside. The staff always took my privileges away for unnecessary things and when I did my bed that had the TINIEST mistake they took my privileges for it. There was Staff that helped me a lot in Averill and understood me, but I wouldn’t go back to that place ever again. (Some kids Called me Slow and I hated that.)
My experience at hillside had it’s ups and downs but i promise you they work really well with the patients here. I won’t be disclosing my cottage but my stay here was amazing! I stayed for about 2 and a half months. This was my first ever residential facility. I was nervous at first but as i got well adapted it felt like everyone there understood me. Hillside really helped me with the DBT skills and lessons. Along with the conant school, the teachers were amazing!. Great staff as-well for the cottages. Some of my favorites were Ms. Tess, Ms. Lena, Ms. Lee, and Mr. Austin. (He was night staff) Overall hillside helped me get back on track and i would recommend immediately! Thank you hillside for everything! ❤️
Hillside Treatment Center helped me more than I can ever put into words. When I first came here, I was struggling and didn’t really believe things could get better. The staff treated me with so much care, respect, and understanding — they truly listened and helped me feel safe. The program taught me how to take better care of myself and believe in my own strength. I left there feeling like a completely different person, in the best way. I’ll always be grateful to Hillside and everyone who supported me along the way. I would specifically like to talk about Ms.Sann. She works on the Averill cottage (the one I was on) she was absolutely amazing and helped me in ways I can't even express. I absolutely lobe her, she was like a second mother to me. She really did care about every single one of us. I would also like to shout out Ms. Amarah. She was absolutely amazing aswell. I was put on a specialized program made specifically made for my needs, and she helped me work through it. I absolutely love both of them and Hillside in generall. This definitely was not the case while I was still in there, but looking back at it everything they did was specifically to help us grow.
